Temple of Green Elixir Cannabis Oil – RSO / FECO-Type Extract

RSO = FECO-type extract, which I personally call Temple of Green Elixir cannabis oil.

The full-spectrum cannabis extract has many names circulating: RSO (Rick Simpson Oil), FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil), Phoenix Tears – and in most cases we are talking about the same thing: a very concentrated, alcohol-extracted, thick black cannabis oil that contains almost the entire phytochemical profile of the plant (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, etc.).

RSO got its name from Canadian engineer Rick Simpson, who made this oil for his own use after official medicine failed to help with his head injury and later skin problems. According to his own account, the extremely potent cannabis extract relieved his chronic symptoms; then he applied it to a basal cell carcinoma on his skin, after which he began sharing the recipe publicly and for free.

Where do RSO and FECO differ?

The Emily Kyle FECO article states it very clearly:

“RSO is FECO… the main difference is the solvent.”

Rick Simpson’s original recipe mentions naphtha, ether, and later 99% isopropyl alcohol as solvents. The modern FECO school (Emily Kyle, Extractohol, NOIDS, etc.) specifically recommends:

  • Use only high-proof, food-grade grain alcohol (ethanol),
  • because naphtha and isopropanol are not safe for human consumption.

So technically:

  • RSO = FECO-type extract, only the classic “RSO recipe” often uses non-food-safe solvents.
  • The “perfect” home recipe today aligns with FECO: the same full-spectrum oil, but made with food-grade ethanol, controlled decarboxylation, and proper safety steps.

Temple of Green Elixir secret trick for refining cannabis extract: Filter mixture slowly through clean bag/cloth or stocking with heat-resistant gloves for silky "pharmaceutical grade" plant-free concentrate. Place filtered tincture in lab beaker, evaporate slowly at 60-70°C to deep green-black, transfer to syringe for easy dosing, storage, and cooking. WikiMary, WikiLeaf, ADHD420AREA logos emphasize safe handling.

Who makes it how? – RSO, FECO, Magical Tincture

1. Rick Simpson’s classic RSO – bucket + rice cooker

The original Rick Simpson method:

  • large amounts of dried cannabis flowers,
  • covered with naphtha or 99% isopropyl alcohol,
  • the resin is “worked out” with a wooden spoon,
  • the mix is filtered, then the solvent is evaporated in a rice cooker,
  • ending with a thick, black, sticky oil drawn into syringes.

Pros:

  • simple, requires few tools, produces a very strong full-spectrum extract.

Cons / problems:

  • isopropyl alcohol and naphtha are not food-safe solvents,
  • their residue can be toxic and is not ideal for medicinal oil.

2. Modern FECO – the Emily Kyle method (food-grade ethanol)

The modern, “clean” approach:

  • wants the same full-spectrum extract as Rick Simpson,
  • but uses only high-proof, food-grade ethanol (Everclear 190–200 proof),
  • decarboxylates based on the cannabinoid profile,
  • and evaporates the alcohol using safe methods.

Emily Kyle specifically states:

  • FECO and RSO are essentially the same end product,
  • but FECO uses food-grade alcohol, while classic RSO often uses isopropanol or naphtha,
  • and isopropanol is NOT safe to ingest, therefore not recommended for home medicinal oils.

3. My own Temple of Green Elixir cannabis oil – ethanol-based method

When making my own medicinal extract, I use only high-purity, food-grade ethanol (minimum 95% ethyl alcohol). This guarantees that no technical solvent residue enters the final product and ensures the cleanest, most complete full-spectrum oil.

The alcohol must be food grade, non-denatured, as this is the only way to ensure safe and effective extraction.

4. MagicalButter Tincture – when you don’t evaporate the solvent

The MagicalButter recipe focuses on making an olive oil tincture:

  • decarboxylated cannabis + olive oil,
  • the machine runs a 4–8 hour cycle at 55–71 °C, mixing and heating,
  • you strain it and get a strong olive oil tincture that can be used as is.

This is not FECO/RSO, but a strong olive-oil extract that:

  • is less thick,
  • is easier to dose.

What makes a “perfect” modern FECO/RSO recipe?

For an educational, responsible, high-quality recipe, these elements count today:

  • Food-grade ethanol – no industrial contaminants, evaporates safely.
  • Targeted decarboxylation – time/temperature differs for THC and CBD flowers.
  • Safe evaporation – no open flame, well-ventilated area.
  • Full spectrum – no excessive refinement (no winterization) to preserve minor cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • Realistic communication – not marketed as a miracle cure; very strong experimental extract with lots of anecdotal but few clinical data.

Step-by-step: Full-extract cannabis oil (FECO/RSO) – safe home method

Important legal note

In many countries, including several EU member states, producing high-THC extracts is illegal. This description is for educational purposes only. Everyone is responsible for their own local laws and their own decisions.

1. Raw material and solvent

You will need:

  • Cannabis flower or trim – THC-dominant, CBD-dominant, or mixed.
  • Food-grade grain alcohol, minimum 150 proof, ideally 190–200 proof (Everclear or equivalent).
  • Heatproof jars, oven, tray, parchment/aluminum foil.
  • Filters (coffee filter, cheesecloth, fine mesh).
  • Electric hot plate, rice cooker, or double boiler.
  • Well-ventilated room, fire extinguisher.
  • Glass or plastic syringes for storage.

2. Decarboxylation (activation)

Decarboxylation is essential if you want THCA → THC or CBDA → CBD activation. Approximate guidelines (always check your oven’s real temperature):

  • THC flower (THCA → THC): ~115 °C for 40–45 minutes.
  • CBD flower (CBDA → CBD): ~116 °C for 90 minutes.
  • Mixed profile: ~116 °C for 60–75 minutes.

Steps:

  1. Coarsely break up the dried cannabis (do not grind into powder).
  2. Spread it on a tray on parchment or loosely covered glass dish.
  3. Start the oven cold, set to 115 °C, and decarb for the required time.
  4. Let it cool slowly inside the oven after turning it off.

3. Making the tincture – “Green Dragon” vs quick wash

The next step is making the alcohol tincture, which you will later reduce into FECO/RSO. Emily Kyle distinguishes two main methods backed by lab measurements:

Green Dragon (long soak, stronger, but greener, more chlorophyll):

  • Decarbed flower soaked for hours/days (often frozen) in alcohol,
  • with shaking or agitation.

Golden Dragon / QWET (short wash, lighter color, less chlorophyll):

  • Alcohol and cannabis both pre-frozen,
  • shaken for a few minutes and filtered immediately.

Observations:

  • Green Dragon → higher potency, but darker, more plant-tasting tincture.
  • Golden Dragon → cleaner taste, lighter color, slightly lower chlorophyll.

Home compromise method for FECO:

  1. Put the decarbed, cooled flower into a jar.
  2. Cover with cold grain alcohol.
  3. Seal and freeze for 4–6 hours, shaking occasionally.
  4. Filter through coffee filter/cheesecloth into a clean jar.
  5. Optionally perform a second short wash for higher yield (weaker extract).

4. Evaporating the alcohol – the most dangerous step

High-proof alcohol is extremely flammable. Safety first.

Rules:

  • No open flame – no gas stove, no cigarettes, no sparks.
  • Use only electric heat sources.
  • Ensure strong ventilation and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

Practical steps:

  1. Pour the filtered tincture into a heat-safe glass or metal container (rice cooker, double boiler, etc.).
  2. Heat at ~80–90 °C or the rice cooker’s “low/keep warm” setting to slowly evaporate the alcohol.
  3. Let the volume reduce while gently stirring from time to time.
  4. When only a thick, dark brown/black syrup remains, it's nearly done.

Testing for alcohol residue (flame test):

  1. Dip the tip of a clean metal object (e.g., a paperclip) into the oil.
  2. Move into another well-ventilated room.
  3. Bring a flame close to the tip.
  4. If it ignites, alcohol remains → return to heat. If not, it has evaporated.

5. Storage, dilution, use

The warm, thick FECO/RSO can be drawn into glass or plastic syringes (no needle), or scooped into small dark jars.

Dilution options:

  • Mix 1:1 with MCT or olive oil for dropper use.
  • Or keep pure FECO/RSO and dose “rice-grain sized” amounts from a syringe.

Usage forms (general, not medical advice):

  • orally, swallowed, mixed into food or capsules,
  • sublingually in tiny amounts,
  • topically on the skin.

Why is RSO/FECO so controversial?

Because:

  • There are thousands of anecdotes about RSO/FECO improving symptoms (pain, nausea, appetite, some even use it during cancer).
  • But there are no large, controlled clinical studies proving it “cures” cancer or other diseases as a standalone treatment.

Therefore:

  • It is not considered an official therapy,
  • it does not replace medical treatment,
  • and everyone experiments at their own risk.
